  • Red Light Realizations: How Our Family Vacation in Amsterdam Took an Unexpected (and Hilarious) Turn

Family vacations are always a mix of excitement and chaos, especially when you’re traveling with teenagers. For us, it was our first big trip to Europe.

I’m Claire, a mom who loves planning every detail. My husband Mark is the laid-back one who “just goes with the flow,” and our kids—14-year-old Jack and 11-year-old Sophie—are at that age where they’re too cool to admit they’re having fun with their parents but still tag along for the snacks.

When I found a “charming canal-side apartment in the heart of Amsterdam,” I was sure I’d nailed it. The reviews mentioned the “vibrant atmosphere,” and the photos looked straight out of a travel magazine. What could possibly go wrong?

The ‘Perfect’ Location

When we arrived, everything seemed to be going perfectly.

The apartment was cozy, the view was Instagram-worthy, and everything really was just a short walk away. Mark gave me a thumbs-up for my planning, Jack found the Wi-Fi password in record time, and Sophie was already snapping photos to send to her friends. I felt like the ultimate travel planner.

Little did I know, my “perfect” planning was about to backfire in the most unexpected way.

A Magical Evening Stroll

Our first evening in Amsterdam started exactly as I’d imagined.

After dinner, we decided to take a casual stroll and soak in the city’s charm. The canals sparkled under the streetlights, and the whole city seemed to hum with life. Sophie was fascinated by the boats, Jack was unusually quiet (a rare win for a teenager), and even Mark seemed impressed.

Then, it happened……

As we wandered further into the city, Sophie pointed ahead and asked, “Mom, why are all those windows glowing red?”

I paused for a second, trying to process what she meant. Glowing red?

I glanced up—and then it hit me. The red lights. The neon signs. The women in the windows.

We were smack in the middle of Amsterdam’s infamous Red Light District.

“What Kind of Show Is That?”

Jack, always the quick thinker, muttered under his breath, “Uh, Mom, I don’t think this is a Christmas thing.”

Sophie, on the other hand, pointed to a neon sign that read “Live Show Tonight!” and asked, “What kind of show is it? Like a play?”

Mark, trying his best to keep a straight face, leaned over and whispered, “Claire, where did you book this place?”

I wanted to disappear. My brain scrambled for a PG explanation while I tried to figure out how to get us out of there—fast.

A Hasty Escape

“Okay, kids, let’s head back to the apartment!” I said, my voice unnaturally cheery.

Mark chimed in, barely hiding his laughter, “Let’s call this an adventure. Time to move quickly, team!”

We speed-walked through the narrow streets, dodging groups of tourists, awkwardly avoiding eye contact with anyone, and ignoring the very awkward sights around us. Jack had a smug grin on his face like he couldn’t wait to tell his friends, while Sophie kept asking innocent questions that I really didn’t want to answer.

Back at the Apartment

When we finally made it back to the apartment, the tension broke.

Jack looked at me with a smirk and said, “Nice planning, Mom. Definitely family-friendly.” That set everyone off. We laughed until we cried, the awkwardness melting into one of those moments you know you’ll be telling for years.

Mark, ever the jokester, added, “Well, at least it’s close to the attractions!”

Even Sophie started giggling, though I’m pretty sure she had no idea why we found it so funny.

Lessons Learned

Looking back, I can’t stop laughing at the whole experience. Sure, it was mortifying at the time, but now it’s one of those travel stories that gets funnier every time we tell it.

Jack loves teasing me about my “excellent planning skills,” and Mark calls it our “Red Light Adventure.” Sophie, thankfully, didn’t understand most of what was happening, so for her, it’s just a funny story about a “weird neighborhood.”

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that travel isn’t just about the perfect itinerary or the Instagram photos. It’s about the unexpected moments—the ones that make you laugh until your stomach hurts and remind you that sometimes the best memories come from things not going as planned.

Would You Do It Differently?

So, if you’re planning a trip to Amsterdam, here’s my advice:

  • Double-check the neighborhood before booking.
  • Pack your sense of humor.
  • And when things go sideways, just embrace the chaos.
